Dr. Buckworth conducts research on
exercise adherence and the psychobiology of
exercise and mental health. She is the co-author of Exercise
Psychology (2002) with Dr. R.K. Dishman. Dr. Buckworth was the
Principal Investigator on an NIH-funded study to explain and
predict exercise adherence in college students use the Transtheoretical
Model. Some current projects include exercise and depression,
increasing adherence to walking in women who are overweight or obese, and
the relationship between mindfulness, stress, and exercise.
Graduate student research projects target the psychological and
physiological correlates and consequences of acute and chronic physical
activity. Examples include the application of the Transtheoretical
Model to exercise; the influence of personality on behavior change
strategies; defining intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for
exercise; psychosocial characteristics of runners; and the effects of
preferred exertion on mood and enjoyment in depressed women. |
