The purpose of this site is to encourage Counselor Education programs around the country to develop integrated and thorough suicide prevention programming and curriculum for school, mental health, and rehabilitation services counselors-in-training. In the larger society, suicide is a topic that does not garner a lot of attention, despite its standing as one of the major causes of death in this country (8th leading cause of death overall and 3rd leading cause of death among adolescents). Similarly, Counselor Education programs often do not provide detailed and practical training for developing counselors, despite the fact that almost every graduate student and/or practicing counselor will become involved with a student or client living with issues related to suicide at some time during his/her training and/or career. We hope this web resource can share with fellow supervisors and counselor educators, the impact that suicide currently has on our students and clients, the importance of preparing counselors-in-training to address this issue, provide examples of how programs can prepare their students, and highlight available resources that are pertinent to suicide prevention training in supervision and counselor education.
