Brief Overview of the Program

The community counseling track (90 quarter hours) prepares students to become Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCC) in Ohio . With an LPCC in Ohio , counselors can practice independently, or within the context of hospitals, clinics, community agencies, etc. Counselors can diagnose and treat persons with mental and emotional disorders, do career counseling, testing, etc. It is a very broad scope of practice.

Program Objectives & Competencies

The faculty in Counselor Education is committed to offering an academic program which prepares graduates to meet the variety of challenges faced by professional counselors in today's changing world. To achieve this purpose, the faculty has established the following objectives:

  1. To offer a graduate program providing both a common core of content and process with flexibility for students to meet their professional goals through course work, Practicum, seminars, and related experiences which enhance the development of professional counselors.
  2. To extend the opportunity for graduate students to develop, understand, utilize, and participate in research contributing to the body of knowledge.
  3. To recruit and select graduate students who can successfully pursue and entry level graduate degree, and who posses personal qualities and experiences which contribute to self-awareness, acceptance of self and others, and the capacity for relating to others.
  4. To engage in continuous evaluation of the graduate program which can enhance the effectiveness of graduates in professional practice.

The Master's Program is designed to result in competencies which allow the graduate to practice in the field. The specific competencies students are expected to achieve are listed below:

  1. To gain increased knowledge and understanding of individual and group counseling theories, techniques, and practices.
  2. To integrate interpersonal qualities and theoretical understandings that translate into effective counseling relationships.
  3. To effectively utilize community resources.
  4. To increase awareness and understanding of the counseling process as it applied to both men and women, to people from diverse cultural backgrounds, to the gifted, and to those with various physical or mental handicaps.
  5. To gain knowledge, understanding, and utilization of career development theory, research, and practice to facilitate meaningful career decision-making.
  6. To gain knowledge and skill in program development, especially in the area of needs assessment, consultation, coordination;, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  7. To become aware of the research base in the field, and to generate and utilize new knowledge through research
